On my sit spot in my back yard after a client session. Helping her begin to drop the harsh knife of criticism she wields so often on her sweet self.

She’s not alone either! Most of us are so hard on ourselves! We see our faults and magnifying them with rebuke… somehow thinking that if we’re tough on ourselves we’ll shape up! Only it’s never the case. We just find ourselves more deeply entrenched in hidden shame.

I’d found that combining mindfulness with a somatic presence approach, practiced again and again, can turn the corner on this habit when years of therapy wasn’t able to change the behavior.

The sacred belongs right here, experiencing with our senses what draws us to wonder. And isn’t wonder a doorway to the ineffable?

I was at Indian line Farm on Tuesday picking up my share… the last person of the day. As I was picking my flower bouquet, the bees and butterflies were so everywhere. Then I heard a thrumming and looked behind me to discover a hummingbird indulging in nectar. There’s no shortage of joy here.

I wonder what they’re here to teach us. Maybe the pure joy of living!

This butterfly invited me to open just a little further to receive what’s already here waiting to take me there!

We are built for this. Our bodies have way more than 5 senses to tune in… to notice… to receive the innumerable delights, the beauty and wonder of this exquisite Earth.

Only we miss most of them, not because they’re not there. It’s only because we are deep in what feels more important… our thoughts, worries, or obsessions.

Right now. In this moment, just look around. Find one experience that you see or taste or smell or hear or feel that attracts you.

Now take that in. For just 5 seconds. Let yourself REALLY love what the soft animal of your body loves.

This is not wasted time. This is time meant to balance the scales of life, to ease the day’s troubles, to bring you just a little bit more joy.

Our senses connect us to the sacredness of our fee

Our senses connect us to the sacredness of our feeling nature. Something most religious traditions have demeaned for millennia.

We just aren’t very practiced at it. We’ve been taught to ignore the body… to abuse it and call that good work. To prioritize productivity and our well-laid plans over our senses’ very clear messages.

But the world is changing. We’re finally learning to listen to the somatic cues the body gives us for wisdom and appropriate action. To let our minds off the hook of always needing to figure it all out, and begin to respect a wisdom they haven’t yet learned they could trust.

The time is now! And why I’m initiating a Sangha of the Senses. Join me online September 16th, 7-8:30 Eastern.

Your body already knows how to lead you home. We just haven’t been taught to listen.

Do you play life just a little more safe than you need to? What moment of a little outrageousness can you gift yourself today?

Maybe saying what you actually like about someone else? Out loud? Telling them how beautiful their eyes are? Or how you’ve always been a little entranced by their … ! Maybe how their smile warms up your day. Go out on a limb. Give it a try!

Then imagine what might be even more outrageous!? Because a wise woman knows her outrageousness is just a part of her truth! And speaking our truth frees us up for much more!
